Homemade wind barriers have been erected to protect villagers and their homes on Malai Island.
Over 500 students from Malai and Tuam primary schools in Siassi, Morobe, are likely to miss classes after strong winds sprayed the island with salt water, damaging food gardens.
However, Malai Primary School headmaster Jessie Tapui said: “We need to prevent the wind from carrying salt from the sea onto roofs.”
