POLICE in West New Britain are urging the public in the province not to harbour criminals from “outside” who are trying to take refuge there.
Provincial commander Superintendent John Midi issued the call yesterday after receiving intelligence information that certain members of the notorious Tommy Baker gang, who had caused mayhem in Alotau, were travelling to the New Guinea Islands region and trying to hide in the province.
“It is dangerous to harbour wanted criminals,” Midi said.
“They are unpredictable and can turn around and harm the community. I urge the public in the province to report the sighting of any suspicious persons to police so that we can check them out.
“Their rightful place is the prison.”
Midi said a coordinated effort has resulted in two suspected members of the gang being arrested in Namatanai in New Ireland on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Midi said police in the province had arrested three people allegedly involved in the murder of a man in December. His body was dumped in the sea.
Midi said the killing was related to a land dispute between the Taropi and Rapuri people.
He said the victim was from Talasea and was married to a Rapuri woman and was allegedly killed by suspects from Taropi.
Midi said both groups were claiming ownership of the piece of land that had led to a fight last year.
“Police are continuing investigations into the matter.
