WEST New Britain (WNB) has recorded nine new coronavirus (Covid-19) cases over the weekend.
The province’s total Covid-19 cases, as a result, surged to 51, the third highest after the National Capital District which had 354 and Western with 204 cases.
Six of the new cases were male and three were female.
The oldest was 63 years old while the youngest was 38 years old.
Four of them had no symptoms of the virus while five experienced cough, diarrhoea, fever, sore throat and headache at the time of testing.
The WNB rapid response team is conducting contact tracing to determine the extent of the outbreak.
The surge team from the National Control Centre composed of experts from the Health Department and the World Health Organisation were still in the province to support the provincial counterparts in the response.
National Pandemic Response Controller David Manning called on the people around the country to observe the Covid-19 health protocols.
He said people still had to wear masks, practice hand sanitising and avoid crowded areas.
Manning said PNG had done far better than many countries and that was because of the drastic measures taken earlier this year. “We cannot let our guard down and should continue to be vigilant,” he said.
