TAURAMA Wolfpack continued their winning run with a 26-10 victory against Talai Spartans in the Moresby South Rugby League A-grade at Moresby South Stadium on Saturday.
The reigning premiers had to overcome a strong Spartans outfit in the second half when they picked up momentum and applied pressure with good field position. Spartans led 10-8 at halftime.
But first-half tries to Koisen Siga and Nelson Philip a well as one conversion were Spartans’ only points and Wolfpack did all the scoring after the break.
Geno Velena and Vali Geno each scored an unconverted Wolfpack try before the interval.
Captain Maxwell John combined well with Malai Kua, Steward Walker, Kasa Bakawe, Danny Brooks, Vali Geno and Jerry Waira to dominate Spartans in the second half.
PNG basketball international Purari Muri’s athletic prowess was on show as the fullback beat two defenders to score a try on the edge.
John, Mick Melo and Geno scored Wolfpack’s other tries in the second half.
Junior David, Wari Arova, Eddy Bytes, Willie Moses, Joshua Paul and Bryan Iso stood out for Spartans, but they were starved off scoring opportunities after the break.
Meanwhile, Koki Eels beat Vadavada United 14-4 in the upset of the round and Gabutu Dragons shut out Southern Sons 36-0.
Dragons lead the 17-team ladder on four points, alongside fellow unbeaten sides in Wolfpack, Joyce Bay Roosters and Kaugere Bulldogs.
Trailing them are Kone Eagles (3) Vabukori Mosquitos (2), Two-Mile Pearls (2), Six-Mile Crows (2), Eels (2), Talai Spartans (2), Vadavada (2), Kaugere Seagulls (2), Kipo Eastern Pride (1), Rabbitohs (0), Sab City Raiders (0), Southern Sons (0) and Koro Souths (0)
