POLICE in West Sepik have detained a woman on suspicion of smuggling 750 poultry eggs from Indonesia into Papua New Guinea.
Provincial police commander Chief Inspector Mosses Ibsagi said the suspect was arrested on Thursday at Pewi block in Vanimo town with 10 trays of eggs with each tray containing 75 eggs.
“We are now conducting investigations and she will be charged under various transnational criminal offenses for allegedly breaching the National Agriculture Quarantine Inspection Authority and Customs Acts.”
Ibsagi said in another case, four people on their way to Jayapura city were found to be in possession of 20kg of compressed cannabis.
They were arrested in Vanimo and charged with conveying a dangerous drug and appeared before the Vanimo District Court last Wednesday.
“Their case have been adjourned to April 15 for trial and are now been remanded at the Vanimo jail.
“Their dinghy and outboard motor engine has also been impounded and are now at the police station,” Ibsagi said.
He said the suspects were stopped by police near the Vanimo wharf.
“Detection of smuggling of drugs and other contrabands by police is becoming successful because of the effort and commitment by police officers although we are not well equipped with logistical support like boats and vehicles,” he said.
“We face many challenges every day in conducting our duties along the PNG-Indonesian border”.
