Woman fined K600 for assault, ordered to compensate victim

A WOMAN charged with unlawful assault and using threatening words was fined by the Lae District Court yesterday.
Senior magistrate Pious Tapil ordered Dian Kipoi, 33, from Taguru village, Pangia, Southern Highlands, to pay a court fine of K600 on the charge of assault.
Tapil struck out the second charge and converted the K600 bail to a court fine.
The court ordered Kipoi to pay a compensation of K1,000 to the victim within two weeks.
“There is police, report your problem to the police and don’t take matters into your own hands,” Tapil told Kipoi.
Tapil said police were there to handle disputes and complaints.
According to police, Kipoi assaulted the victim at East Taraka market on the afternoon of May 23.
Kipoi punched the victim in the face and slashed her twice on the head, stabbed her twice on the head with a kitchen knife.
In another case, Tapil sentenced Sebastian James, 30, from Parakris village, Bulolo, Morobe to 12 months imprisonment for drug possession.
James was caught by police with marijuana at Zenag, Mumeng, Bulolo on Monday.
