A 20-YEAR-old woman in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville was ordered to pay K500 by the end of next month as compensation to another woman she  wounded with a bush knife after suspecting her of having a sexual affair with her husband.
The defendant, Madi Morea, from Mapisi village in the Kunua district, pleaded guilty to  wounding Hilda Mesa and was convicted by the Buka District Court last week.
On March 3 between 7.30pm and 8pm,  the defendant was at Hagus village in Buka. It was alleged that the defendant told a Hilda Stive and Amanda Matsi to go and bring Hilda Mesa to see her husband Rud Timot. The victim agreed and came with four other girls. As they were walking towards Rud Timot, the defendant came from behind the flower garden armed with a bush knife and swung it twice which landed on the victim’s left arm, causing a deep cut. The defendant then ran away and the victim was taken to a clinic for treatment.
The medical report stated that the victim was referred to the health centre due to severe loss of blood.
The defendant told the court that she cut the victim because she was having a sexual relationship with her husband.
Magistrate Bruce Tasikul however said it was not a justifiable excuse because there were legal ways to address such issues. She will be on a good behaviour bond for two years and is required to perform customary reconciliation with the victim.
