A WOMAN leader in the Chimbu’s Kerowagi district has called on police in the province to get rid of homebrew.
Women-In-Politics Chimbu branch president Dre Cecilia said homebrew-related problems in her district were becoming a major concern for mothers and girls.
Cecilia said despite alcohol being sold in the province, many people turned to homebrew, claiming it was cheap and made them drunk faster.
She said many mothers and girls were repeatedly harassed by men drinking homebrew in public.
She said it was not good when women and girls lived in fear on their own land.
Cecilia said community leaders were willing to help police but “police must come down to the community level to establish good contacts with the leaders and they will help identify people involved in producing homebrew”.
She said the longer they waited, the more the problem would get out of hand and it would be hard to address.
She said the Jiwaka region of Western Highlands and Kerowagi were both known for high homebrew consumption but Jiwaka had now changed.
Cecilia said Jiwaka police set a good example by cleaning the region and urged the Chimbu police to do the same.
She said the majority of law-abiding citizens wanted order to be restored in the district
