Woman on trial over murder

A 22-YEAR-OLD woman has been committed to stand trial in the National Court for allegedly killing her husband’s lover in Port Moresby last year.
Central Ccommittal Court Magistrate Alex Kilandi committed Nicole Brey, from Wosera-Gawi, East Sepik, based on police evidence since there was no defence submission made by any lawyer.
“You are now committed to stand trial in the National Court since this case has been going on for so long with no defence submissions made by you or any lawyer representing you,” Magistrate Kilandi told Brey.
The matter returns on Nov 28.
Brey was alleged to have stabbed and killed Jacklyn Clement at her husband’s residence last year.
Police alleged that on July 17, 2021, at 5am, Brey received a call from a friend informing her that her husband Mathew Kiak, a PNG Defence Force soldier based at the Goldie Training Depot, but lived with his family at Taurama Barracks, was with two women drinking alcohol at his Two-Mile residence.
Brey went to Two-Mile and confronted her husband and several other people, including Clement and another woman, between 7am and 8am.
She argued with Kiak for taking their money the previous day and not returning it.
During the argument, Brey allegedly took out a knife and tried to stab her husband in the leg, but he fled. Brey then argued with Clement and during that confrontation stabbed her in the back.
Clement ran to the main road where she fell and died.
Upon seeing what had happened, Brey called her father who came and picked her up and took her to Taurama Barracks.
On July 21, Brey surrendered to police, was arrested and charged with one count of wilful murder.
