POLICE in Kokopo, East New Britain have arrested and charged a man suspected of domestic violence under the Family Protection Act and he is in the Kokopo police cell awaiting court appearance this week.
Assistant Commissioner of Police for the New Guinea Islands (NGI) Perou N’dranou said the incident occurred on Saturday between 8pm and 9pm at Takubar village in the Kokopo-Vunamami urban LLG, Kokopo.
N’dranou said their trade store key was thrown to the suspect from the house by his wife who couldn’t deliver it as she was breast-feeding their two-month-old baby.
N’dranou said the suspect became frustrated and assaulted the wife while she was breast feeding.
The wife suffered multiple injuries to her face and other parts of her body.
N’dranou also said that, according to the victim and her family, the husband had been continuously abusing the wife since they got married in 2018.
The abuse was ongoing and fearing for her life, the victim with the help of her family members reported the matter to the police.
N’dranou added that family members knew the husband as “a very violent man and has been abusing their daughter since they got married”.
“For all the domestic violence cases, I am taking it as priority for me, and will make sure all the domestic violence matters are dealt with accordingly and the perpetrators face the full force of law,” N’dranou said. “Domestic violence and abuse are becoming a concern and that is why I make it my priority to take tougher action.”
