Women’s centre to help job-seekers

WOMEN and young girls can now seek professional advice from experts in business to write up job applications and get career up-skill training.
The Women’s Advisory Centre was set up early this year to help women in the National Capital District with their careers, set up small business or income opportunities and to get a job.
British High Commissioner Jackie Barson laun­ched the centre on Wednesday, project ma­nager Dia Tarubogana said.
“WAC is here basically to help unemployed women, female youths and mothers as well as working professionals to develop their potential to become productive and financially independent,” Tarubogana said.
He said the centre was a Women in Business and Port Moresby Professional Women’s Club project which had been operational since March.
“We have workshops every Wednesday with prominent women guest speakers invited to give talks on important to­pics,” Tarubogana said.
“Three weeks ago, we had Janet Kaule from the National Development Bank speaking to women on business opportunities and how to prepare loan proposals for the bank and there was a talk on legal rights of women in the last session with Maya Pei­pul.”
The centre was set up in March in a partnership between the British High Commission, National Capital District Commission and the Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce and Industry to help women in the nation’s capital.
More than K100,000 in contributions from the high commission and the NCDC went into setting up the advisory centre, while the Chamber of Commerce offered office space in the United church building to house the centre.
