THE New Ireland Women’s Council has welcomed the New Ireland government programme to provide water, sanitation and hygiene for villages in the province.

It will provide sustainable community water supply, toilets for all households and changes in hygiene behaviour.

It will form an integral part of the model village programme introduced in New Ireland five years ago.

NGO representative in the women’s council Adelvin Malonga said: “This will encourage mothers and families to take control of their lives.

“We do not believe in handouts.

“We believe in providing improved government services to lift the standard of living.

“The provincial government’s bold move will show the rest of Papua New Guinea how a province should work in helping people help themselves.

“New Irelanders must put politics aside and co-operate with Sir Julius  to move New Ireland forward.”
