Women’s movement in full swing

A FORMER woman parliamentarian who became a role model for many women after years in PNG politics, has urged women to rise up and be partners with their male counterparts in the development of the nation.
Nahau Rooney, a former Manus MP, said she was confident the bill to allow 20 reserved seats for women in Parliament would be passed.
“I am confident that the bill will go through and that women can make a difference in the way decisions are made on the floor of Parliament,” Ms Rooney said.
“It may be before Parliament waiting to become legislated but, the way I see it, Parliament has already passed that bill,” she said.
“Women, this is a time that we march out of the kitchen and into the boardroom.
“It is a  time to come out of the peripherals and into the mainstream.
“We must rise up and prepare ourselves for the harder task which  is yet to come,” Ms Rooney said to those who had gathered to celebrate International Women’s Day at the Lamana Hotel yesterday.
As she spoke, she drew rounds of applause from the audience.
Ms Rooney thanked the Government for its support in ensuring that the bill was tabled in Parliament.
She challenged women to become effective in what they do and to take on a revolutionary approach to make a change for the good of the people.
