Women’s project host song contest

 THE Port Moresby Safe Cities Programme is hosting a song competition to help raise awareness about reducing violence against women in public places. 

“The UN Women Safe Cities song competition is one of the biggest opportunities to be discovered and to advocate against violence in PNG,” celebrity performer Moses Tau said in a statement yesterday. 

“I encourage the young ones and amateur artists to follow their dreams and enter this competition,” Tau said.

“The competition invites the country’s best and brightest talents to compose songs, inspire audiences and help create safe communities.” 

Launched last month, the competition is part of the United Nation’s (UN) Women’s Safe Cities programme to make the capital city’s markets safe for all who use them, particularly women and girls. 

Winning songs will be shared with the UN Women headquarters in New York, as well as other UN Women offices in the world, to promote the work done in Port Moresby to reduce and prevent sexual harassment and other forms of sexual violence against women and girls.

Entrants may submit as many songs as they wish. 

The songs may be in any language but the lyrics must be translated to English and submitted with the entry. 

Songs will be judged on creativity, originality, lyrics, melody and arrangement. 

The winners will be awarded prizes from the City Pharmacy Ltd group of companies, Airways and Grand Papua Hotels. 

Prizes include vouchers up to K500 as well as accommodation, dinner for two, gymnasium passes and day spa services. 

The competition closes on Nov 8 and entry forms can be collected at the UN Women PNG country office in town or the Safe Cities office at Lagatoi Haus, National Capital District Commission or through email: [email protected]
