THERE is no aid post in Middle Watut, in the Mumeng local level government, close to the Wafi mine,  despite it having 12 villages, a women’s leader says.
The lack of facilities is seen as the cause of at least 37 child-birth deaths over the past 15 years, Zipporah Bendum says..
Bendum is secretary of the Mumeng Women’s Association, in Bulolo district, and said poor health services in the area were causing deaths of mothers from birth complications.
Bendum, who visited the villages in Middle Watut area last week said: “There is no aid post or any proper health services available to mothers in that area. The nearest aid post is near the Bulolo Highway and mothers have to walk a full day to reach it. But sadly some mothers do not make it.”
Villagers said they had not had an aid posts for the past 15 years.
“These deaths have occurred due to birth complications and there was no proper aid post or health service or worker available to attend to these mothers,” Bendum said.
“Mumeng Women’s Association is a voice for these mothers. We visit them and see what is affecting them. We are appealing to the Morobe provincial government to set up an aid post in Middle Watut.”
