Women focus on sewing uniforms

A GROUP of women in East New Britain are undergoing a sewing programme focusing on making school uniforms.
The programme was facilitated by the Toma-Vunadidir local level government (LLG), in Gazelle, ENB, who identified women in the wards who could sew.
Toma-Vunadidir LLG president Robert Mati said the programme was funded by the LLG who purchased sewing machines and materials.
He said the programme aimed to encourage the locals to be self-reliant and to save money.
Mati said the cost of school uniforms was high and this initiative was a way of providing a means for uniforms to be made and sold for more affordable prices and for women to also earn an income.
“We want to grow the local economy,” Mati said.
A mother from the Tagitagi No.2 Caroline Ririmut said many women had shown interest in the programme. She it was harder than sewing meri blouses but more training would see the women master the skills.
