THIRTY-two women graduated as motor vehicle mechanics, information technologists and carpenters last week from the Porgera Vocational Centre in Enga.
They were part of the 78 students who graduated.
Several village leaders who attended the ceremony told the people there to change their mentality and behaviour because this was the first time for the district to witness women entering these fields.
This was the fourth graduation the vocational centre has staged.
With more girls seen graduating in these fields, the Porgera District Women’s association donated a computer set worth K3,000 to the centre.
The centre’s management was surprised when the women group presented the computer on the stage during the graduation.
Association president Maria Kenjary said they wanted to sponsor mothers and girls to live a good life and that was why the members decided to buy the computer set.
“I’m proud to see gender equality when 32 women set history in the electorate by graduating in the male-dominated field,” Kenjary said.
She said sponsoring the vocational centre was like giving something back to mothers and girls.
“You have made us proud and, I believe, women will now follow suit.
