Women in Hela told to unite
HELA Women’s Forum chairman Sgt Alice Ariko says now is the time for women to be agents of change for women and children in Hela. “We must voice our issues with the Government and development partners,” she said. “One voice will not be heard, united voices will be heard. “Let us set aside our differences and start working together.” Speaking at the forum, Ariko said it was encouraging to see Hela women leaders step up collectively to address issues affecting their home. “They also came up with practical recommendations to the Government and development partners to achieve real change,” she said. According an Oil Search Foundation (OSF) media statement, the women met up with Governor Philip Undialu, the provincial administrator, public servants, head of security forces and development partners for the first time in Hela. Advocating for peace, security and stability was the theme of the historical forum that saw Hela women leaders come from all three districts of the province (Komo-Margarima, Tari-Pori and Koroba- Kopiago) to share their ideas and raise concerns. “They turned up in force, with some walking up to three days from very remote villages to attend,” it said. Women and youth leaders were given an opportunity to speak openly about their issues and challenges, such as the on-going tribal fights, lawlessness and killings that cause them to live in fear. A moment of silence was also observed on the first day of the forum for those women and children who had tragically lost their lives. Discussions were held on how women could work together with provincial leaders and development partners to foster peace and reconciliation in bringing about a Hela that is secure and stable.
