NATIONAL Women’s Day gives everyone an opportunity to recognise women’s contribution to their families, communities and the economy, an advocate said.
Safe Cities Programme law and justice coordinator, Delilah Sandeka said: “Markets offer a crucial opportunity for women to manage a small business, provide for their families, save money and make a concerted contribution to strengthening the nation’s economy.”
Representatives from the Women Safe Cities Programme, National Capital District Commission, police, National AIDS Council Secretariat and the Australian Federal Police observed the annual day.
Sandeka said women had the right to buy and sell in markets should be free from violence.
Gordon’s Market police unit officer in charge Sgt Patrina Dikin said: “Women and girls are the target of constant threats and violence at Gordon’s Market and we are working to ensure perpetrators of violence face justice, and that victims have access to medical facilities through our referral system.”
She said police were working in partnership with the Australian Federal Police to prevent and reduce violence and crime at the market.
The day was marked with dancing, feasting and friendship.
