WOMEN members of an association in Eastern Highlands have opened a new restaurant in Goroka.
Members of the Sista Helpim Sista Association also launched the business arm, Eastern Sistas Development Corporation Ltd, on Thursday.
Eastern Highlands Governor Peter Numu officiated at the gathering at the National Park near Goroka market.
His wife Tess opened the new Mumu Kai Restaurant.
Numu assured the women of his full support in their endeavour to promote economic growth.
He allocated K50,000 as seed capital to the association.
Numu said the provincial government prioritised economic growth, infrastructure, trade, industry and agriculture.
“You are the first group to initiate your own economic growth initiatives and it is in line with my policy to grow the economy of our province,” he said.
Association president Rita Karre said the women had faith in themselves and had come far in the past five years.
Karre said the K50,000 donated would help set up the new Eastern Sista Development Corporation.
Association executive Kim Papaso said the main idea was to help less fortunate women involved in subsistence living to try out business activities.
