THE Registry of Political Parties and the Australian National University have agreed to improve women’s leadership and political participation in Papua New Guinea.
Political Parties Registrar Dr Alphones Gelu and ANU’s Professor Michael Wesley signed a memorandum of understanding last Friday to commit themselves to the project.
“This is a long-term commitment and it is important for the development, health and wealth of PNG,” Gelu said.
“Women are able to participate in leadership at all levels of decision-making. It is important to strengthen the commission’s ability to support women candidates and for political parties to support women candidates.”
Wesley said that given that no women was successful in the 2017 general election, it was an important partnership.
“I am happy to be formalising the good working relationship between the commission and the Australian National University developed over several elections.
