Womsis celebrates opening of new library
The National, Monday 16th April 2012
THE remote Womsis village in Aitape district, West Sepik, is committed to the education of its children and the new library they built is testament to this.
Womsis is located between Yangoru, Dreikikir and Aitape and people walk three hours to reach the nearest coastal village in East Sepik.
A big celebration was held as Aitape Lumi MP Patrick Pruaitch opened the Professor Otto Nekitel Library last Friday.
School headmaster Ignas Wirkas said the school started in 1979 with no development because of its isolation and remote location.
The library, which started with a donation of K100 and was made from bush materials, was the initiative of the late Prof Otto Nekitel.
Unfortunately, he passed away before the building was completed.
In keeping Nekitel’s dream alive, Pruaitch assisted with K30,000 towards the building.
The total cost of the library was K63,000.
And during last week’s opening, the MP presented another K50,000 for the construction of a permanent double classroom for the school.
He said parents should be commended for all the hard work they put into building the library.
Pruaitch said as long as there was accountability of funds used, he would be more than happy to continue funding assistance to the community.
