HEALTH and HIV/AIDS Minister Jelta Wong says about 42,000 people in Papua New Guinea have been vaccinated with the vaccine set to expire next month.
“This does not mean we have hit the target,” he said.
“We still have a long way to go until we reach as many people as we can in the coming weeks.”
Wong said with those who had taken their first jabs and were now going for their second, the number of people getting vaccinated should hit 100,000 in the coming weeks.
“We have been vaccinated and people should not be afraid to take it,” he said.
Wong said PNG would have more vaccines available in the coming weeks with donor partners “ensuring that we have enough”.
He said the Chinese government brought 200,000 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine to PNG on Wednesday, that would be available to Chinese nationals and, later, made available to locals.
“By now, every provincial health authority should have gone into rural communities in their provinces to educate and vaccinate the rural population,” he said.
Wong said at the national level, some provinces had done well in vaccinating their population while others are not doing enough.
“Provinces that have yet to vaccinate their rural population are urged to step up and get as many people vaccinated.”
