LAW students at the University of Papua New Guinea will finally have their own school building – after more than 20 years of squatting around campus.
The School of Law, which has been using other school buildings, will be housed at the new K30 million building.
It will be the first building at UPNG to be solely funded by the national government.
Executive dean of the School of Law Prof John Luluaki, said at the ground-breaking ceremony the construction of the only law school building was historic.
He thanked Department of National Planning secretary Dr Peter Gallah Kora for awarding the contract to a national company, Nuigini Builders.
It was designed by Korana Consultants. The building is expected to be completed in 18 months.
NDC Governor Powes Parkop said as a former student and lecturer at the law school, he was very excited and relieved to finally see a law school building built.
He said the court bench was made up of graduate lawyers from the school and deserved the support from the government.
The school had produced lawyers not only in PNG but also the Pacific.
“Now that you will have a building of your own you have all the reason to go out and be good lawyers, better judges and better magistrates,” Parkop said.
UPNG chancellor Stephen Pokawin thanked all those who went through the planning and engineering stages.
