RENOVATION work on the condemned Nuigo police barracks in Wewak, East Sepik province, has started.
The refurbishment would cater for the increasing police strength in the province.
The barracks, which can cater for 24 single policemen and a family, had deteriorated over the years and was recently declared unfit for human habitation.
Wewak police station commander Charles Parinjo said an initial K50,000 was given
to the contractor, Dieter Engineering, early
last month.
He said the major maintenance work
would cost K100,000 and had been funded by the East Sepik government.
The barracks would be ready by April before the election operation begins.
