Work begins on proposed teachers’ college in Jiwaka

GROUNDWORK has started on a proposed teachers’ college at Nondugl in Jiwaka.

Locals donated 10 hectares of land for the construction of the college.

Work started five months ago, with the girls’ dormitory and staff complex completed.

Work is under way on the boys’ dormitory, students’ dining hall, an administration complex and lecture rooms.

During a site assessment visit to Nondugl last Friday, assistant secretary teacher education division, Walepi Wingi commended the community for taking the initiative without funding support from the government or any other donor agencies.

“I particularly thank you members of the community and the initiator of the project, Paul Siwi, for taking that bold step to start somewhere,” Walepi said.

“However, I will not approve a teachers’ college for Nondugl as yet. It is a national function and certain procedures will have to be followed before the National Department of Education under the teacher education division will give the approval.

“But it is good to dream as dreams sometimes come true. Firstly I will make a report to a group called the Implementation and Monitoring Group (IMG). 

“When they see a need to send a technical team to assess the preparatory work here, then their report will be compiled and sent before the NEC for final approval,” he said.

He said the community should liaise with local education authorities and the provincial government for their endorsement and then get back to him in Port Moresby.
