UNIVERSITY graduates have a responsibility to society which they owe their education to, Sir John Kaputin said.
He said it was particularly true in Papua New Guinea where access to universities was still limited  and where personal benefits of a university graduation were not widely shared.
He told graduates at the 57th University of Papua New Guinea graduation to reflect on how far they had come and to do decide on what they still needed to do.
“Your formal education has equipped you to make a real difference in your own and the lives of others,” he said.
He said the challenge was to think and act with proper regard not only for one’s immediate interest but for the common good, particularly in the well-being of the people less fortunate than them.
He said a university graduate was not only well-placed when it came to developing and sharing knowledge but also for the common good.
Sir John was also awarded a honorary doctor of philosophy in political sciences.
