Work on bridges begins
The National, Wednesday March 2nd, 2016
WORK is underway for the restoration of two bridges destroyed by floods in Northern, provincial administrator Sem Vegogo says.
The Department of Works (DOW) allocated K1.3 million which has seen the completion of the Haijo Bridge along Oro Bay to Popondetta Highway.
Haijo and Girua bridges were washed away early last month after continuous rain in the province.
Vegogo said work had started at Haijo.
He said contractors would look into Girua Bridge after Haijo but it was a more challenging task.
Vegogo said the bailey bridge that was washed away was a challenge because the course of the river continued to change.
“The wet weather is continuing in the province and we are hoping that there would not be any further disruptions,” Vegogo said.
The Oro provincial government made a submission of K7.5 million to the Government.
Lately, Northern had been badly affected by the present wet weather.
