THE Papua New Guinea Rehabilitation Centre has reached a milestone by completing a new building worth more than K400,000 to enhance its operations in the rehabilitation of disabled citizens.
The completion of the new conference centre in Hohola was proudly announced yesterday by the centre chairman Brown Kiap.
Kiap thanked corporate sponsors involved in the construction of the building and also conveyed his appreciation to the NCD Governor Powes Parkop for the seed capital of K240,000 for the project.
“I would like to thank Monier Ltd, Dulux, Hebou Construction and Homeguard for their contributions in making the initiative a reality,” he said.
Representatives of the corporate sponsors also made a few remarks and expressed satisfaction on the outcome of their contribution and assistance.
Kiap also made it known that the conference centre was open to any group or person who might want to host conference or meetings.
He said when the programme starts operating, the disabled would be trained in basic skills like carpentry, sewing, cooking and weaving so that they do not become liabilities but have something to contribute to their homes and the society as a whole.
The purpose of the building is to run rehabilitation programmes for disabled persons who are specifically confined to wheelchairs which include paraplegics, quadriplegics and amputees.
Currently, the centre will cater for those living within the city, due to insufficient resources to cater for patients from other parts of the country.
However, the plan is to expand its operations, given the assistance of additional sponsors and the government.
