KOKODA Track Authority (KTA) has recently embarked on track conservation projects to preserve and improve deteriorated sections of the Kokoda Track for the coming trekking season.
KTA chief executive James Enage said: “It will be a busy trekking season this year as we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Kokoda.
“The conservation work is important to ensure the track is in great condition for trekkers and communities.
“Kokoda Track Authority rangers will lead teams of skilled local communities to refill pitfalls, clear drainage,” Enage said.
Work would take place from Mt Bellamy (Kokoda Gap) to Owers’ Corner, which affected about 60% of the entire stretch of the track.
The conservation work was part of the ongoing safety package programme under the joint
PNG-Australian Kokoda initiative, implemented by the authority.
The launch of the official trekking season will take place next month with track conservation works scheduled to be completed today.
KTA services 14 wards along the corridor, providing support to over 35 villages.
It has so far invested K33,300 over the past year in continued track maintenance and additional K140,000 for community projects to ensure the trekking industry was maintained.
