WORK on the K10 million police housing project at Yawasoro started two weeks ago as workmen put finishing touches to the first three of the 40 houses at Kreer Heights.
Wewak Police Station commander Charles Parinjo moved a bulldozer last Tuesday into Yawasoro where he ordered a thorough clean up of the area before construction work begins.
Dieter Engineering, a local company, has been contracted to erect the houses.
Company manager Mario Sarita said his men were assembling the first 10 units, which should go up as soon as the land clearance had been completed.
He said the houses would be similar to Kwik Built-type houses but would have additional features that would make them maintenance-free.
Sarita said the houses would be assembled at their workshop at Wirui and then transferred in four sets of 10 houses to Yawasoro for construction.
He said 10 houses were for commissioned officers and 30 for other ranks.
All the houses are double-storey, with the ground floor consisting of a kitchen, toilet and shower facility, laundry area and a balcony while the upstairs has bedrooms.
Parinjo said it was his desire to negotiate development in the police force so that police services were effectively delivered to the people of East Sepik.
The East Sepik administration has made available K50,000 for the renovation of the run-down Nuigo single barracks.
The barracks should accommodate 12 single policemen and a family unit.
