Work underway on police officers’ accommodation

 POLICE officers in Mount Hagen and Kudjip are being provided accommodation as part of the constabulary’s modernisation programme.

The construction of the duplexes were undertaken after the Government allocated K267 million last year to renovate police quarters, acquire resources and increase police manpower.

Five duplexes are under construction at the Kimininga barracks, in  Western Highlands, while five more are almost completed in Banz, in Jiwaka.

Police Commissioner Tom Kulunga went to the two provinces last weekend to inspect the project sites.

He said the objective was to provide good accommodation for police officers around the country so they could improve productivity.

Police around the country are to receive new uniforms, patrol cars, training and work equipment.

The Constabulary is recruiting young men and women around the country to increase its manpower from 6,000 to 10,000 in the next five years.   

Kulunga said workmen were constructing the new training cell at the Bumbu barracks in Lae, while similar housing projects were approved for East New Britain and Madang.

The road at McGregor Barracks, outside Port Moresby, is being upgraded. The Bomana Police College is also undergoing renovation.

Kulunga said: “Once the buildings at Bomana are completed, the college will be transformed into a centre of excellence as part of the constabulary’s modernisation plan.”
