Work underway to monitor blind spot areas in city, says police

POLICE in Lae are working to monitor blind spot areas which are the main places that criminals operate from, says Lae Met Supt Chief Insp Chris Kunyanban.
“The criminals are good at understanding how closed circuit television (CCTV) works so we are doing all we can to make sure those blind spot areas come under the police watch through CCTV,” he said.
Met Supt Kunyanban said there were blind spots in Top Town and the main market area which police had identified and they were working to get those places covered by CCTV. However, the main focus now was at the main market area, where complaints have been risen from the public on pick-pocketing and other petty crimes. “The need for the CCTV to be fully functional and keep track of those criminals and their activities is growing, so police need support from stakeholders,” he said.
Met Supt Kunyanban urged the provincial government and other authorities as well as business houses to help police improve policing at these identified blind spots.
“I am confident if those blind spot areas came under CCTV, we’ll be able to minimise petty crimes.”
Meanwhile, Met Supt Kunyanban said the erection of a pole at the Lae Top Town bus stop on Monday would accommodate four CCTVs.
