A GROUP of 20 people from settlements in Port Moresby participated in a two-day workshop on how to use social media responsibly.
The initiative was in collaboration with the National Capital District youth desk and public relations division.
Facilitator Dickson Sorariba said it was funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
It educated the participants about social media techniques, its applications and how to use it in a responsible manner so that their voices can be heard by those in authority.
“The youths can produce short films,” said Sorariba.
“It also looked at the Cyber Crime Act, defamation laws, freedom of information and expression in the constitution which gives citizens the freedom to use social media.”
The participants were told to be responsible for contents and pictures posted on Facebook.
Youth coordinator Rex Buka said the possession of cell phones among youths had affected their lives. Some posted things which could be defamatory.
The training helped them be aware of legal issues.
