Workshop on e-ID card system ends in Mt Hagen

A ONE-day workshop to introduce the national electronic identification (e-ID) card system has ended successfully in Mt Hagen, Western Highlands. 

Stakeholders from various sectors in the province participated. The system which is more effective in establishing a live population database introduced to address the lack of secured and universal method for citizen identifications in PNG.

Project director and deputy national statistician Roka Koloma said they would move to the other 22 provinces in the country. Yesterday a workshop was held at Jiwaka. Eastern Highlands and Morobe will be next week.

He said the national e-ID project would provide a unified national population information database of the 7.1 million people in PNG and identification cards for everyone 17 years and above.

He said it would be invaluable for the government especially for the districts and provinces and a national e-ID card system for e-applications in the future.

“There are three phases that needs achievement and project preparation and establishment of provincial and district offices is the first stage they will be working on soon,” he said.

He said local level government presidents and ward councillors would play a vital role in identifying and emitting information to the team.
