THE National Economic and Fiscal Commission (NEFC) hosted a workshop for the New Guinea Islands region in Kokopo, East New Britain.
The theme of the workshop was “Looking back, Going forward” to accelerate progress towards efficient service delivery.
The opening ceremony for representatives from national agencies, departments, development partners and the provincial partners from the region was held at the Vunapope Bishop’s Conference room yesterday.
The participating provinces are West New Britain, New Ireland and Manus.
ENB Governor Nakikus Konga who opened the workshop said the purpose of the regional workshops are about helping provincial administrations to better understand budgeting, spending and reporting compliance requirements.
Konga said this would ensure funding made available by the Government was reflected in service delivery to the people.
He said it was incumbent on provincial governments to continuously improve service to the people.
“The NEFC regional workshops are a centrepiece of the implementation of the reforms of the inter-governmental financing system,” he said.
The workshop brought together national and sub-national agencies as well as the stakeholders.
“In spite of all the changes that are happening, one thing remains and that is our people who need effective, efficient and accessible basic services in health, education, transport infrastructure maintenance, primary production and village courts no matter where they live,” Konga said.
