SATURDAY is International Women’s Day, celebrated around the world to honour all women regardless of their background, struggles, sacrifices and their accomplishments.
In Papua New Guinea, organisations, churches and individuals are working with the government and the United Nations to see women and girls have basic human rights.
According to a United Nations report, there were a lot of achievements and good outcomes received as a result of collaborative participation from different agencies on the agenda of women rights in the country over the past years.
There were awareness done for police to identify and report gender-based violence and as a result a number of help centres were built around the country that provides medical support to victims of gender-based violence.
Political representations have been improved. Women’s democratic representation and participation have increased with three women elected into parliament and 45 into office or leadership positions in the local level governments.
According to the report, there has been slow but steady progress made towards women empowerment in the country.
“However there is more that needs to be done to reduce the gap on the issue of gender-based violence in the country.”
The UN women’s agency believes that more will be achieved in the coming years and the gap on violence against women in the country will be decreased.
