WORLD Vision has provided relief assistance to families living at the base of Mt Bosavi in Southern Highlands.
World Vision in partnership with the Evangelical Church of PNG distributed 250 10-litre jerry cans, water purification tablets and blankets. Villager Janet Timmon welcomed the donation saying children were greatly affected by the earthquake.
“Children have fallen ill with diarrhoea, fever and common cold. I’m happy the items will help the children,” he said.
Tammy Beiyo, the church station manager at Bosavi, said the earthquake destroyed most of the water sources in the area.
He said the only way the villagers could get clean water was to wait for rain.
“Gardens and water sources have been destroyed. Some houses have fallen while others are no longer in their original state. We need food, water and clothing.”
He said although rivers had returned to their normal level, villagers did not want to risk drinking water from there.
The World Vision team visited Dedesa, Waso, Suko, Wabi, Wabisi and Wasana in the Nipa – Kutubu District of Southern Highlands.
They talked to the villagers about hygiene and demonstrated how to use water purification tablets to make the water drinkable.
