Babmu St Henry Primary School in Wosera, East Sepik, came alive last Saturday as hundreds of people gathered for the opening of two double classrooms and three staff houses.
School head teacher Jeffery Wangi and his board of management slaughtered five pigs and distributed the meat to all villagers and the Wosera-Gawi joint district planning and budget priorities committee who celebrated the event in style.
Wangi attributed the success to the community, which provided labour and materials.
That helped reduce the cost of the buildings to only K250,000.
The Wosera-Gawi JDP&BPC, under the chairmanship of Ronald Asik, funded K100,000 while the balance was settled by the school from money collected from project fees.
North Wosera LLG president Isidore Kamlabi, who officiated at the opening ceremony on behalf of Asik, praised the people of Bambu for taking ownership of the project to provide all materials and labour needed to complete the five buildings.
Kamlabi said this was the way forward for development because when people took ownership of development projects, they would easily lure government to provide financial support where possible.
He presented K1,000 each to Kuwanga and Nanu primary schools to support their administration for the 2012 academic year.
District administrator Stiven Aulem said Wosera Gawi had marked education as a key priority and would work to ensure that their children’s education was given priority.
He said the JDP&BPC had spent K2 million already on education in the district this year.
