Wright stands out in college basketball

HIS first season in the United States college basketball system may have come to an end, but Papua New Guinea national team standout Lloyd Wright knows his work has just started.
Despite battling through injuries, the 19-year-old had a solid campaign for Orange Coast College competing in the California Community College Athletic Association.
In 26-games for the ‘Pirates’, the 194cm guard averaged a respectable 4.3 points and 1.8 rebounds, helping the team to a 10-win and 16-loss overall record.
He had a season high 11-points against San Diego Miramar, while also netting 10-points on three other occasions against Saddleback, Riverside and San Diego.
Basketball PNG Federation chief executive officer Joel Khalu caught up with Wright to discuss his first season playing abroad:
How has your first season of US college basketball gone for you on the court?
The first season of playing college basketball for me was good. It was a great experience adapting to the American style of play. Unfortunately, I was carrying knee injuries and didn’t have the season I wanted, but still held my own on the court.
What have been the toughest challenges on the court?
The toughest challenges on the court was definitely pushing through injuries and changing my game so I could still be effective with the injuries. Also, coach Spencer is old school, so playing hard, full court pressure defence all game is not always easy.
What have been the toughest challenges off the court?
The toughest challenges off the court are living without parents and having to do all the jobs around the house. Good time management is critical — getting homework done, chores around the house, being on time for class, being up early for weights, being ready to give 100 per cent at practice; eating and sleeping.
 Things you need to work on or improve for next season?
Coach says I need to focus on fixing and keeping my knees healthy. I need to shoot more to become a major scoring option in my sophomore season.
Basketball fans in PNG will remember seeing a healthy Wright in action during the 2015 Pacific Games. Teams in the US be warned, when he gets fully fit for college season number two, nothing or nobody will be slowing him down.
