DEFENDING champion Michael Wright has taken a two stroke lead after the opening round  of the Morobe Open yesterday.
Wright shot an eight under par 63 ahead of fellow Queenslanders Bradley Andrew and Nathan Ubergang both of whom shot six under par (65) on the par-71 Lae Golf Club course.
New South Welshman Brad MacIntosh was the next best contestant shooting a five under 66.
New Zealander Sven Puymbroek carded four under 67 to be fourth on the leaders board.
With A$100,000 in prize money on offer the tournament has attracted 59 international and local professionals to the Morobe capital.
Two-time champion Heath Read and Craig Scott, who finished third last year’s tournament, are players who could move up the leader board today after quiet first rounds.
The local contingent comprised Robert Peni, Augustine Peni and Nelson Gabriel.
With heavy rainfall overnight conditions were damp under foot but play progressed with competitors pleased with the condition of the greens and fairways.
The tournament ends on Sunday before the 54th Export Larger PNG Open which begins next Thursday and ends the following Sunday at the Port Moresby Golf Club course.
