Madang Mayor Joe Yama made it clear that the Madang Urban Local Government was still the custodian of the Japanese built K26 million market in town.

Yama made the MULLG’s stand clear on Friday due to various talks in town that said the market would be managed by Madang provincial government.

He said an independent management would run the market but would report to MULLG at the end of the day.

“I want to assure everyone that the market is the property of MULLG and the people of Madang,” Yama said.

He said Madang provincial government could have its input but MULLG was still the custodian of the market.

Yama said it was a modern market and appealed to vendors and Madang public to take good care of the facilities there.

“We are still waiting for the launching date to be confirmed while we look forward to the grand opening of one of the biggest developments we have,” he said.

“I don’t want vandalising, the cost of this market is big and was given to us on good will by the people of Japan, so we must look after it.

Yama thanked the Japanese International Cooperation Agency and the people of Japan.
