TOP teams in the Port Moresby conference of the Ox & Palm women’s National Soccer League fell victims to the tailenders during the final match at Lloyd Robson Oval on Saturday.
Competition leaders and depleted Mungkas went down to a fired-up VAT Yamaros 2-0 while Hekari sent University Inter FC packing for the season with a 3-1 drubbing to end the season on a winning note.
As predicted, Yamaros came out firing from all angles to ensure Mungkas go back to the drawing board to prepare for the final series against the winners of the Lae conference.
Mungkas coach Lua Vagi admitted that Yamaros ran over them, attributing their loss to missing a number of their players on representative duties.
“With eight of our representative players out of the country, I had to bring in those from the bench. They could do little against a more experienced Yamaros outfit,” he said.
The players from the Gerehu suburb made their intentions known midway through the opening half when Peninsa headed a superb cross from Jacqueline Chalau’s corner kick for the opening goal in 20th minute.
The goal lifted their morale and they continued to run rings around their opponents.
But Mungkas stepped up their defensive line until Waive netted another goal to give Yamaros a 2-0 win.
Despite the loss, Mungkas will advance to the finals of the WNSL against the winners of the Lae conference.
In the opening match, Hekari United shocked University 3-1. University should blame themselves for the loss after failing to play well.
With the break-down in communication between University’s Francisca Mandoni, Elenorah Mandoni, Miriam Louma and Jannie Norris saw Hekari United capitalise to score the goals.
University pulled one back when striker Esther Kurabi scored but a silly mistake by University goalkeeper Roxanne Komeng resulted in Ara Midi tapping in to take their lead to 3-1.
