Yebi High School rundown despite abundant funds

THE recent announcement by the chairman of Yebi High School that it is doing well and its financial books were open for audits prompted me to pay a visit for confirmation.

I expected the school to have been developed, with major facility upgrades and constructions of student dormitories, ablution blocks, a permanent mess hall and a library.

To my surprise, I saw the same old buildings from 2009, the ruined dormitories and the mess hall in one of the classrooms.

I also found classrooms without desks and blackboards.

I am not a stakeholder  but a disturbed public servant who has children attending this school, and am a keen advocate for good governance in this school.

I have attended nearly all the ground-breaking ceremonies, where the local MP dished out cash grants and redevelopment funds for the school.

I have observed that no one seems to provide constructive criticisms and do not care of what happens to all that good money.

None of the landowners appointed as board members care. School funds do not seem to be approved by the board for disbursement over the years.

I also learned that the board had not conducted any meetings for two years and have failed to furnish a financial report.

School truck and equipment are on hire and I am left to ponder where the contribution of 656 students in 2014 of K200 each (equivalent to K130,000) have ended up.

My gut feeling is the actions of those on the school board only reveal the traits of very corrupt, selfish individuals.
