BUSINESS activities in the industrial hub of Lae, Morobe, will be boosted when the Yumi Lukautim Morobe (YLM) project is implemented later this month.
Morobe provincial youth council (MPYC) chairman Robert Williong said the purpose of implementing the project was to encourage business houses to become more involved in their activities without worrying about law and order issues.
The council has received K1 million from the Morobe provincial government to start the project in Lae, with the other eight districts to follow.
It is based on the pioneer Yumi Lukautim Mosbi project, a model for the coordination of urban safety and crime prevention activities through provincial government partnering with law and justice sector agencies, statute authorities, private sector and community.
It is a unique, all-inclusive cross sectoral network of people wanting to make a change that enhances social cohesion at all levels.
Williong said the YLM project had been a success in Port Moresby and they were looking at do so in Lae by restoring and giving the crime-infested city a better image.
With support from the Morobe provincial administration and Lae’s Chamber of Commerce the council plans to tackle law and order issues, and reduce poverty and unemployment.
In Port Moresby, this ongoing intervention is funded primarily by the National Capital District Commission, the PNG government and AusAID.
It is managed by the urban safety unit within the NCDC and reports directly to the city managers.
The committee comprises representatives from the NCDC, law and justice sector, City Mission, NCD Provincial Youth Council, Consultative Implementation and Monitoring Council and PNG Sports Foundation, Digicel Communications, City Pharmacy Ltd and PNG Power.
