THERE is greater advantage in practising yoga in a humid country such as Papua New Guinea because the body perspires more and releases toxins through the skin, Augusta Amadio, a local expert says.
Amadio, who has taught yoga in Port Moresby for more than a year, said perspiration acted as a natural internal cleanser.
She said performing yoga in humid conditions was an advantage compared to practising it in cold climates.
She said yoga and its cleansing benefits helped to reduce disorders in the human body and increased flexibility.
“Yoga is perhaps the only form of activity which massages all the internal glands and organs of the body in a thorough manner and acts in a wholesome manner on the body,”  Amadio said.
She said that stimulation and massage of the organs in turn benefited people by keeping away diseases and providing a forewarning of the likely onset of a disease or disorder.
She said other benefits of practising yoga included stabilisation of the autonomic nervous system and equilibrium, decrease in pulse and respiratory rates, decrease in blood pressure and normalisation of weight.
Amadio runs classes from 5.30-6.30pm at the yacht club’s gymnasium on Wednesday and Friday nights from 9-10am and 5.30 to 6.30pm and 9-10am on Saturdays.
She said those interested should bring their yoga mat, large towel, yoga block, a strap or belt.
She is also available for home lessons.
