Yonki police checkpoint

Letters

YONKI police station in the Obura-Wonenara district, Eastern Highlands, needs a young and vibrant leader.
The Eastern Highlands provincial police commander and the deputy commander of Highlands Eastern End have to take note of the nightmare that many boss crews and drivers go through at the Yonki checkpoint where the demand for money by an old police officers has been an ongoing problem for a long time.
Yonki is the gateway to the Highlands region and what we do there reflects on EHP and the Highlands region.
As a young patriotic Papua New Guinea citizen, witnessing police brutality at Yonki checkpoint was the worst thing I had ever seen.
I wonder if it is normal for police officers to demand money from the tulait bus (night bus) on the Highlands Highway.
Firstly, I have to commend the two young police officers on the night of July 29, 2018, who had to calm down the old officer who was aggressive towards the crew and driver of the bus when they refused to give him money.
I wonder if it was the old patrol commander’s (station) normal duty to demand K600 for loading onion bags being taken to Lae market by a poor mother fromMt Hagen.
Do we have young officers to replace him?
