DOUGLAS Young, the Archbishop of the Mt Hagen Catholic archdiocese, is the new chairman of the Divine Word University council.

He takes over from Fr Garrett Roche and will serve the council for three years.

University president Fr Jan Czuba said Young had contributed significantly to the university by introducing the Bachelor’s programme for PNG Studies during his term as head of department.

He said the university council was looking forward to working with Archbishop Young.

Young said he was looking forward to his new commitment.

“I hope I can bounce ideas from time to time. I am very honoured to be part of the council,” he said.

Young toured various sections of the university to familiarise himself with recent developments and plans of the university.

He holds a doctorate in Conflict Transformation from the Macquarie University in Australia and has served in Papua New Guinea for more than 30 years. He is originally from Australia.

According to the Catholic News online, he had used that to his advantage by conducting research on PNG’s various reconciliation processes.
