A YOUTH leader has called on parents and public to make it their duty to keep young people away from illegal activities.

Debeini’s Living Water Church’s Bobby Yagas told The National following news of alleged rape attack by youths on a tourist couple trekking the Kokoda about three weeks ago.

“The fault also comes back to parents as they have a responsibility to teach their children about what to do and what not to do,” Yagas said.

“I see a lot of negligence by some parents who let their children hang out with whoever they want and do whatever they want and they do not care what the children are hearing or doing.

“Peer-pressure is a big issues at present with youths because they go around and hangout with children as young as seven-years old, doing things which they should not be doing such as smoking.

“Parents need to do the right thing by taking their kids to church because that is where they can be raised properly to be good citizens of the community and the country.”

“We’ve seen a huge need in this area and that is part of the reason we are having the interdenominational youth rally at the Sir John Guise Stadium indoor complex in March.

“We cannot sit back and let our children be influenced by bad habits. We need to something to help them and for us to have a good community.

“If the Government is not doing something or someone is not doing something to address these issues, then we young leaders of all the churches, with the grace of God, will rise up and do something to help  ourselves. Jesus is the answer of all our troubles and worries.”
