 YOUTHS need suitable programmes to develop their potential so they can utilise their knowledge and skills to contribute towards development, an official says.

National Youth Commission policy analyst and UNFPA project official Lasaka Aititus said the commission delivered important programmes to the 22 provinces in  PNG.

He said some of features were:

  • Developing the five-year provincial youth development plans of which 95% was completed;
  • setting up provincial and district youth council networks in line with the NYC Act 1999;
  • youth and small and medium enterprises development in PNG, a trial programme in Morobe and Enga;
  • establishment of youth friendly centres which will be piloted in four districts and the National Youth Training Institute that is in the design and planning stage; and,
  • Capacity-building programmes.

These include leadership and management skills, youth HIV/AIDS awareness and training for youth workers, youth officers, community development officers in provinces and districts, NGOS and women and faith-based organisations to elevate capacity to implement national youth policy 2007-2017. The youth self-management skills training for out-of-school youths was one of the major tasks initiated by Acting Commissioner Norit Luio.
